Looking @ the back the transmission whats the best way to tell them apart?? And I have a Borg Warner 4 speed to a 304 there is a long number on the side of the transmission anybody got a link to a reference chart for this???

you mean transmission or transfer case? there should be an ID tag on the back that has the model number clearly stated.

If your 1979 CJ has stock drive train you have a wide ratio (6.32 granny 1st) T18 and a Dana 20 x-case. The numbers on the side of the transmission should read T18-XX or 1310-XX., something like that. I am not at my main computer or I could post pictures. If this is the case you are one of the lucky ones. Also in 1979 the reverse on the T18 was changed to over and down from over and up. 1979 was the only year you could get the T18 behind the AMC 304 as a factory option. All other years something had to have been changed, either the motor or the transmision.

The Dana 20s I have seen from CJs have tags on the back but the Dana 300 I have has a number stamped on the back that says 300-15-4. Now mine is a 1980 Scout Dana 300 with the Texas (same as the Dana 20) bolt pattern so it will bolt up to the CJ T18 the same as the 20 so the CJ Dana 300s may have a different number. Also, on the T18/D20 combo the shift lever will connect to long shift rails (the rods that are moved by the shift lever) and the Dana 300 will have short rails with the bracket to hold the lever that is part of the front of the case

Here is a couple of links that may help-
