Hey, I'm thinking about getting a CRT hei for my 258. Is this a good swap? I also know about the TFI conversion, but I'd still be using my old distributor rather than a new one. What's better?
Wow, thanks Jay. I had no idea about the gear. I did wonder about the quality since they're so cheap, though. So, I may go to the salvage yard and try to find a TFI donor. By the way, does anyone know how to check a vacuum advance to make sure it works correctly?
You can make sure its doing anything by just disconnecting it and seeing if your timing changes. Checking it's "calibration", for lack of a better term, would be much more complicated.
You might want to look up Zack at zmjeeps.com. I bought one for my 360 two years ago and threw away the Ford ignition system, the coil and lots of wires. If memory serves me corrrect, I used the cam gear off the old distributor, so the gear problem you all suggest should not be a problem for me. I LOVE the HEI! Zack also sells gears for different motors.
