My Grand Cherokee Laredo Jeep is a 2.5TD and has a confusing electrical problem. I am after any advise, tips and a cure if anyone has got one!!

When turning the ignition sometimes the petrol and volt meter dont move, this sometimes doesnt let the car, but on other accasions it doesnt hinder the car from firing up.

While driving the car, the rev counter and speedo switch plummet to zero and can play cat & mouse with me for the remainder of my journey sometimes it even shows the rev counter going off the scale!!!!

Some of these problems can be fixed (starting the car) by pressing the rear windscreen wiper!

Please I need help!! :?|

There are two passable sources to your problem one it sounds like you have a bad connection in your dash, passable the main connector that activates the self dash diagnostics, since some of your gages fail to activate during start up.
Second or related your computer reads a failure at the dash and halts the system from running.

Computer problems are tricky to hunt down, a slight voltage drop from any sensor, even momentary, can cause it to whack out on you like it does. I had a similar problem with my 01 TJ (gas gage failed to read some times), I ended up at the stealership to track it down after my Crank shaft position sensor finally went leaving me stranded on the side of the road.

Your best course here is to take it down to a local auto parts store and have them run a OBDII reader check to see if its throwing a code, if that doesn't produce any thing viable a trip to the stealership is in order.
There they can re-flash the computer for you and with hopes that fixes the problem.
