confused about oil filter brackets

Hey fellas, I'm putting a new engine in my cherokee and have run into a problem. The oil filter bracket that I put on the new motor will not accept the filter. The filter will go on the old engine bracket. I am perplexed to say the least. My wifes cherokee uses the same filter and hers is a 2001 model, 10 years newer than mine. I made sure to pull brackets from jeeps older than hers. Any thoughts on this? Seems to me the filters should fit through out the model between 91 and 01 at the least.

There are 2 different thread and diameter size oil filter that was made for the 4.0 liters. The older build 4.0 uses a Mopar 33004195 filter and the newer builds( 99- current) uses the 5281090 Mopar filter. You can probbably get your local parts store cross these part numbers to their brand.

My 88 and my 96 have different filters. One is metric and the other SAE and slightly different shank/thread diameters.
