Computer gurus help me

My wife volunteered me to start a website/forum for a homeschool group that is forming here in our area.

Anyone want to direct me to the best place to start one? I want it to be reliable, but I have no idea what they cost, or if any of the one's that advertise "free forum" are at all worthwhile.

A point in the right direction and just about any info/tips would really be appreciated.

TC, I've put up three websites with these folks

www.powweb.com

they are wonderful to work with and the file system is easy to work with.
no problems loading the pages and or with bandwidth.
it only cost about $7 per month to keep it up.

can't help on a forum deal, don't know anything about it.

:agree:

Mudwoman's website (weddingrugs.com) is hosted through them - it's my first experience also. Their html editing leaves alot to be desired, but there are free ones out there - and you don't have to know anything about it - all drag and drop stuff. Terry was a great help to me - you may want to drop him a pm!

yeah, Coffee Cup website creator is super cheap around $10 and is a breeze to create and edit your pages.

I've gotten good results / speed from www.ace-host.net (note the ".net" ace-host.com is a forward to fasthost who have poor support from my understanding) The signup is very user freindly. More importantly for you, they offer a variety of "plug-ins" that you can install on your site directly from their control panel (the place you'll administer the site from... not to be confused with the place you'll create the pages from).

Anyway, one of the plugins is PHP-Nuke which is a free site designer that has forums integrated in it. If you've ever seen www.jeepz.com, it's a very similar look and feel. I would not be surprised if Terry is running Nuke. There's a little bit of a learning curve for installation, but a very strong user community for help. Administration/page creation is much easier than trying to put a forum into html. http://www.phpnuke.org/

I like mambo for site design, too. It's also php based, but a little trickier to install and get the hang of. I've never used the forums module with it, but it's not as native as Nuke's forums. www.basementdesignguys.com done with mambo.

PHP is a much more flexible language than html. The ease of creating a site (as opposed to a couple pages linked together) and the much cleaner look of a completed site make the learning curve well worth it in my opinion. It depends how far you want to take it. If you want forums, a PHP variation is the way to go. Feel free to take it to PM if you have specific questions.

i can help you set up your site - contact me if you're interested and i'll quote you a price. I would suggest using Mambo/Joomla (same product, different badge) as a backbone to the site. I've already set up half a dozen sites using this system and I really have it down to a science.
