Does Anyone Else Have A Problem Shifting From 3rd To 2nd. I Have To Almost Come To A Stop To Get It To Go In With Out Grinding. A New Clutch Was Installed A Week Before I Bought It Last June.

Sounds like it needs a serious adjustment. It's all out of whack. And I believe whack sells for around $50-$100 an hour anymore.

My brother just had his clutch replaced in his TJ and he noticed after the fact he was having trouble engaging the gears. Apparently the transmission was fine but the slave cylinder was shot. Once that was replaced all was good again.

slave cylinder is new also. didnt know you can adjust a clutch.

Some clutches are adjustable. YJ's I don't think so. At least my 91 is isn't. Try new fluid. To me it sounds like bad syncros. Mine would do the same thing before it locked up and I had to rebuild it $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

You can't adjust a hydraulic clutch ;)

Try bumping the gas pedal a bit to slightly rev the engine as you shift into 2nd. It will help synchronize the gears.

What kind of transmission oil is in the Jeep? It may be totally unrelated but if it is GL5 like it calls for in many manuals and even the owner's manual you need to change it to GL3 before it kills your brass synchronizers. It was an error by Jeep by listing GL5 and a common mistake to put in. I recommend anyone getting a YJ to change the transmission oil just to be sure ;) Redline MT90 and Pennziol Synchromesh are popular alternatives...

90w is what the manual i have said to put in it...

Don't know didn't look

That's what I'm telling ya... the manuals were misprinted and if you have GL5 in there it will eat your synchronizers and kill your transmission.

I'm not going to bother you with it any further, but you'd better check to see what you put in there or we mightall be seeing posts from you in a few months about how you can't shift gears at all.

that must have been how i killed the synchros in my old 91 - just pulled some 90w off the shelf and swapped it in (in fact, still have a full Qt left - lookin at it now - Valvoline 85W-140 GL5) - heck, i didnt know any better and it was b/4 this forum - GL5 is baaaaad news - in fact - it got to where i had to hold the shifter to keep it from popping out of 2nd gear, couldnt hardly downshift at all from any gear w/o grinding - just a mess and it all started after changing out the transmission oil ... I know better now...

i looked again at work today and yes it is gl5. ill change it next week. thx guys

my yj won't even shift into gear...have no idea whats wrong, there isn't any tensin when i press the clutch petal...slave cylinder? clutch?

that sounds like the slave cylinder. mine did that about a month ago. on the steel line under the jeep there is a tool hanging on the line for taking it apart. mine got stuck where the lines connect together, and came apart.does the slave cylinder have fluid, if not look where the hard line and the plastic line connect.
