I got a 79 cj, last year I put 1/2 ton axles under it, it worked fine my son burned the clutch so this year I change it out. Now I'm getting a bad shack in 4x4 low when backing up. Don't notice it going forward And not so bad in 2 wheel drive starting off from a stop. I checked the for broken parts. So if anyone can help thinks.

Well...... Not saying that is the problem, but........ it's always going to be in the back of my mind.

You can continue by eliminating some other factors. Do you still have the factory style "bell crank" clutch linkage? If so, have you installed a body lift? Are you certain that the trans/transfer case bushing and control arm are solid at the skid plate. The control arm helps off-set rotational torque and if the mounting bushing is broken you can have the problems you are experiencing. Does the front axle have a locker?

Yes bell and linkage are factory parts. No body lift. And I got new trans mounts, that I just but on. And no locker in the front. I was thinking that something had came louse but I haven't found anything. Yet.

One guy at my local jeep shop, was saying it could be the new clutch is giving to much power to the axles, off the start and may need to ware the clutch out a little bit? I asked around some one else heard that too. But that doesn't really sound right to me. He got under the jeep and had me go forward and back and don't see anything loose or bad.

Just spoke with Keith here at GenRight. He has a CJ and gave this input:

If he just replaced the clutch and did not have the flywheel turned (resurfaced) that is probably the problem.
Now for the best part, if the clutch has been in there for a while when he gets the flywheel resurfaced he should replace the clutch assembly.

Yes its mounted to the crossmount/skidplate you should be able to see a pic that I put up. And i see the flywheel.
