CJ doesn't run right...engine surges

Well I was brave and drove my jeep all the way to the hollister offroad park instead of towing it. It seemed to be doing alright, though the max speed on the freeway was about 60-70mph even in 5th gear. The thing is though, after about half an hour of driving on the freeway, the jeep started to surge, where it felt like the power dissappeared and then came back...kinda like the time it ran out of gas, but not as guttless. So I pulled over an poured in some gas, and kept on driving. Everything was fine, but the next day when I was driving I noticed that the power still surges, especially when I am in first or second gear between 1000 and 2000 rpm. Just for reference, the jeep has a new fuel filter, motorcraft carb, and hei distributor. Oh, and i think I noticed the manifold may have still been glowing slightly (discussed in my motorcraft carb post). Any ideas?

Zipper on a soft top?

Is your fuel filter new? You might also check your fuel pressure. You may be running out of gas in the bowl. The fuel pump may be marginal. That happened to me once.

I had a Jeep CJ-7 do this to me for some time until i figured it out. If your filter, pump and lines are new, it is in the tank and the fungus that grows all over the corny filter that is OEM. You have to toss that filter and run an extra filter just before the fuel pump entry line, about 6" down the line from the pump toward the tank. This will cure the issue if all esle is on balance, in good shape.
