I have a 96 cherokee with a missing front drive shaft, when i try to turn the yoke it will only go so far, i think the pinion gear might have a chip in it , i was told by the shop it is ok to drive, but then someone else told me no, since the 4wd is not connected is it ?
Or any advice would be greatly appreciated :?:

You can drive without the front driveshaft, your 4wd just wont work.

If you are talking about the pinion yoke, it should turn freely, this is assuming that the axles are not locked. Lock the axles and see if it still has some play in it.

The D30 you have is not a CAD (center axle disconnect, ie vacuum actuated front disconnect) axle. Therefore the axle shafts will trun with the hubs even in 2wd. The "locking" mechanism is mecahnical and is done in the TC case itself. Put the axle on jack stands and try to turn the pinion, or turn the tires and watch the pinion yoke turn with them.
