Cherokee Axles on a CJ??

Anybody out there done this? Either Cherokee or Grand Cherokee axles under a CJ?

Why? your putting a weaker axle into a vehicle.. on top of that, the diff is on the wrong side, so you would have to flip the 300 if you have that Tcase or swap in a 231. again the 300 is a stronger case.

D44 from a Cherokee is better than a CJ M20 with 2 piece shafts. Hands down! I'd do a YJ front axle though. My son set up his '75 postal Jeep DJ5 with '85 XJ axles (3.73 ratio) and has a NP208 AM on a TF999 I gave him from an Eagle I parted. Unfortunately he had to go back to Canada and couldn't take his toy with him.

If you already had the 1 piece axles and braced axle tubes (I see the M20 tubes bend from even the silliest sideways slides into a ditch!)

8.8 has even larger tubes, but it's not from an XJ stock.

There's a Dana 60 under a rotting Chevy Custom Camper in the barn. Maybe my grandfather would give me a Christmas gift if something happened...

Ditto, and the CJ 30 would be my choice over a YJ/XJ one. 1 piece pass shaft, full floating with servicable bearings. One can argue brakes are better on the YJ/XJ, depends on the year cj.

I wasn't trying to start a fight here guys.....

I have a donated (free) CJ rolling chasis. No engine, trans, Xfer case.

I have a Dodge Dakota 5.2, 3500, and np231.

I have access to Grand Cherokee Axles and steering gear which puts the drive shafts in the correct positions to match the np231.

I also have a friend who is going to build a tube frame for the CJ since the stock frame has been butchered so badly.

My question was to get some input on ride and moderate off road capability. his will not be a rock crawler. Occasional off road trail running is the extent of the rough stuff. I know sissy stuff.

Anyway, thanks for responding to my limited information. I'll try to be more detail oriented in the future.

If it is a grand cherokee, I would avoid the rear axle all together (assuming it is a D44)

I would start by deciding on wheather or not you want to build the jeep, and if the drive train you have is what you want to move forward with, then plan around that. Once you know what your gonna run, get some axles under the jeep. I am not sure what the out put is on that 231, but I will assume it is the same as a jeep 231 so... I would search for a FSJ wagoneer axle set with drivers diff, or a first gen bronco with a 44/9" combo (later being exactly what I would source). Then get your drive train stabbed in there and build away.

So you will basically be using the CJ tub?

The 5.2L drivetrain will work very well, but I would look at heavier axles than what comes in the Grand Cherokee.

What year Grand Cherokee? Some are Mopar axles and some are D35s (mostly 6 cyl models) and newer models have the aluminum D44 (which was set up wrong from the factory)
