Check engine

My check engine light is on, and it's backfiring when it's first started in the morning til I rev it up. Any ideas? Timing belt maybe?
It happens when i get to right around 2100 rpm.

I'd start with the easy less expensive. When have your changes your plugs, cleaned the TB or IAC?
Have you changed anything lately?
What are the codes from the engine lights?

And just to be sure it only happens when on first start in the morning? I ask because if it's every start or other times like idle there could be other items?

Sorry about all the questions.

Back fire is usually the cause of a burn that is way to lean. You may have a vacuum leak in the intake manifold. Is it carbureted?

Until you know the error code it's really just a guess. Most parts stores will check the error codes for you if you don't have a code reader yourself. After you know what the computer is seeing you/we can come up with a plan to get it fixed.;)

Exactly!!

What year Jeep??

To get the codes do the key on ond off 3X and watch the odometer for the codes if its a 97 or newer.

Thanks that was really helpful, I was about to go buy a code reader! I got 12, and 65. 12 being having disconnected the battery from the PCM in last 50 key ons, which I'm guessing occurred when I unhooked the battery to work on the amps and subs last week. The code 65 means that I have high power steering pressure at high speeds. Neither of these explain the backfires. Could the backfires just be from not warming the car up? It only happens when I shift up to second right after I start the car. As for the high power steering pressure at high speeds how would I fix that?

How can i tell if it's carbureted or not? It's a 97 TJ 2.5L manual 5 speed. Sorry for the lack of knowledge.

If stock you have a TB (throttle body). And your correct code 65 is power steering and does not make sense for backfiring.

Did it run rough prior to disconnecting the battery?
Have you ever cleaned the TB and IAC valve on the TB?
When is the last time the spark plugs, wires, rotor Dist. cap been replaced?

I know now what it is! His jeep and my cj7 obviously know each other and have decided to go on strike! That's my official answer

How much would it be to replace all the spark plugs, wires, and rotor dist. Cap?
What's the IAC and rotor dist cap? How do I go about cleaning the TB and IAC? It runs fine just that little backfire after start up.

If it's the backfiring you worried about these should smooth out your idle.
If it's the check engine light. I read the part is a dealer purchased part.

You should do regular maintenance on the below. Some say about 30K mi between. Eventually the untreated backfire will throw a engine code and you'll loose power and MPG.
Link to cleaning IAC and TB
IAC idle air control - a part of the throttle body. see link
distributor cap & rotor - rotor is under the dist cap, Wires hook from the Dist cap to the plugs.

Plugs ~$2 each
Wires ~ $40
Rotor ~ $5
Dist ~$10
Go with OEM parts they run the best from what I hear.
