Catalytic Converter

How exactly do I gut my '94 YJ's cat? I'm getting my K&N this week, and I want to gut it, to get a little better gas mileage.

Thanks.

If you do not have inspection under vehicles where you live, just hav a muffler shop put a new pipe in place of the cat. Or if you have the inspections, get a saw zaw (spelled wrong) and cut a few inches in front a behing the cat. Take a long stick and start punching through the honey comb. The thing is that you will need it to be welded back in place.

Any reputable muffler shop won't do it for fear of being fined if caught, regardless of being in an area where emissions testing is done. There are shops that will do it, mine was cash only  But I didn't pull the cat, just put complete dual exhaust behind a 350 in a YJ that shoulda had converters. Gotta love no sniff tests.

Most catalytic converters these days don't restrict much flow, you won't see much gain. Converters on older models were more restrictive.

You can get a high-flow converter from www.jcw.com for $60 if you want to stay legal and environment friendly

But you might as well take it off for the little bit of increase you will get. If the shop will take it off, they will probally cut it off really cheap if you get a new muffler at the same time.

some shops, regardless of sniff testing or not... will not pass a vehicle if the cat is not in place.... so unless you know of a shop who will let it go... it is better to hollow it than to replace it with pipe

Or you can pretend that you actually care for the enviroment and leave the cat in place or replace with a high flow cat....

enviroment smiroment gut it man.. When mount saint helens blew up it did more pollution than all the cars in america. shhh dont tell those tree huggin h2 burners that or they might have to end their lives hahah

Right on Graewulf. The way I see it, it isn't worth throwing more toxins in the air just for a small performance increase. Some people just don't get it though

Hmm... Where have I heard that before??? Anyways, I don't see how the two compare...

that is right.... just because a natural occurance caused that much polution... doesn't mean that we are justified to do it as well... it actually gives us more of a reason to take care of the problem.... yeah, my cat is gutted.. and i know that it pollutes more than if i had a cat... i WILL say that the gains really aren'y THAT good... i was MUCH happier with a cat, and no muffler
