Catalytic converter question

Graewulf, I am sorry but you repsonse was just not relalistic. Where I live there are not buses. If I want to walk about 20 miles I could get one. As for maintaining you completely missed my point. I work at autozone and I see people all the time come in that serously can't afford it but without a car they can't get to work. They buy 2 of our cheapest spark plugs(they can't afford 6) at 99 cents each since the engine misses so bad is stalls at stop signs and they pay with change becuase that's all they got. Would you rather see there people on wefare? Atleast they are trying to make it on thier own. The last thing they need it to spend $200 to make thier vehicle pass emmision let alone make sure it is safe. Emmissions testing is great in theory but just isn't that practial.

quick question... idea... concept... i'm in a rush.. but.... i know that a cat is made up of coated ceramic... why are mufflers not coated inside with the same materials to stop pollution?

Interesting idea, dont know how far back you could put it from the engine and have it heat up enough to work.

If the "greenies" were so worried about the enviroment.....they should be banning smoking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CLEAN AIR......STOP SMOKING!

Good point on the smoking... how many people die of exhaust? Then compare that with how many people die of smoking... first and second hand smoking?

hmmmmmmmmmmm. I'd vote to outlaw it.

Ban smoking to clean the air? This is getting silly. Banning smoking would not only be pointless as far as pollution goes, it is also a bad idea for several reasons. Just like Americans before us saw immense problems with alcohol prohibition and eventually ended it, we are now seeing those problems with drug prohibition and we will hopefully soon end that too. Ban cigarettes? Sure.....want to bet on how long it is before little children are being gunned down by stray bullets from gangfights over a case of homemade menthols? Sounds stupid, but so did people getting shot over a bag of weed or a little bag of coke....BEFORE the war on drugs came about.

The eco-warrior/"savior of the world" crowd is entertaining, but more often than not it's a bunch of crap. There is a girl that I have seen driving around town in a black VW microbus that is equipped with a bunch of PC bumper stickers declaring her wishes to save the forests and recycle and....well the funny part is that everytime she presses the gas pedal in her hempwagon, she leaves these huge blue clouds behind her. typical. How about that environmental terrorism group that was releasing pounds and pounds of pollutants into the air by burning SUVs...so they wouldn't pullute that same air with their exhaust.....uuuuummmm,okay. Or burning the buildings and equipment of those big bad corporations, just so we can pick up the tab through higher insurance premiums and the companies can use even MORE resources to rebuild/replace the destroyed property. :?

I agree with what youy are saying.. the world sucks.. that's life.. if you're poor, you do what you have to. If you lose your car because you can't pass inspection, I truly feel sorry for that person, but that is life... Which is why I work very hard to make enough money to not have to worry about those things myself. Next time you see one of those truly poor people.. look to see if they smoke, they probably do. They don't consider that their cigarette (or any other vices that they have) money could easily cover the repairs. I see that more often than not. And if they are truly that poor, chances are they may be on some form of welfare already. There's no solution to that problem other than them finding a better paying job, but that is a whole other discussion. My poin tis, if you buy a car, be prepared to pay to maintain it, or look for other alternatives.

bring the muffler closer to the engine... many cars do it

Yeah, would work for trucks, but most passenger cars dont have much space in the cat area, though i'm sure they could figure something out. And, after thinking about it I'm surprised that they haven't done it yet. They seem to make cars now that have one piece break and then you have to replace a whole system of parts. All about speeding up manufaturing and having fewer steps in the assembly line. Though if it were stainlessfrom the factory, you'd probably almost never have to replace it, even in the rust belt.
