can anyone tell me what this is?

I have a 97 jeep tj 2.5. This object was sitting in front of my crankshaft gear on the timing chain just before the cover. My question is, is it important, does it need to be there?

it looks like an oil slinger. usually, those are put in front a place where oil might leak out while driving and the oil hits that and then is slung away from the area being protected.

No i placed it back in. But I'm trying to locate a horrific noise and I thought it might be that

Discribe the noise. Did you recently do any work to your Jeep?

That looks like the seal that was on my timing chain cover. It gos on the circular opening of the timing chain cover. That notch go,s over a keyway.

did you put it on the same way it came off?

sometimes people put those back in backwards and they dig a groove into the covers making a terrible noise. or they put a washer or spacer on the wrong side of it doing the same thing

Yes I placed back in the right way. But it wasn't causing the noise so I took the cover and everything off for nothing. So I'm back to square one

still making noise, hmmm. try starting hte jeep with the belt off, just for a second. if it makes the noise, you know its in the internals, no noise, then you know its the belt or one of hte accessories that belt runs

Well I did that and no change at all. Still making the noise. I took it to an amco near by and the said its either bearing in the transmission or the pilot bearing not sure what that is? Is like the through out bearing? Well anyways the noise doesn't accelerate with the engine. Stays constant. It doesn't matter if the clutch is pressed in or not still makes noise aslong as engine is spinning. I did try shutting it down while moving and the only time it stopped was when I depressed the clutch

Your throwout bearing is the part the is on the other end of your clutch pedal and makes your clutch release..the pilot bearing is what the shaft of your transmission slips into where it marries to the engine

Does the transmission spin if the transmission is in neutral and the engine on? Amco wants 600 just to drop the transmission and if its a throw out bearing or pilot bearing would that be something simple?

The input shaft will always spin even when its in nuetral,The throw out bearing is easy to replace and the pilot bearing isn't bad either, just be sure you have the tools to pull the trans, also a manual will come in very handy...

I don't have to open the transmission case to replace any of those bearings would I?

Hi, the input shaft is locked to the crankshaft when the clutch is not depressed. The pilot bearing only comes into play when the clutch is pushed down. Same with the throwout bearing. When you have your foot off the clutch pedal the throwout bearing does nothing. Only when you depress the clutch pedal does the throwout bearing come into play. The only way I could see the throwout bearing making a noise when your foot is off the pedal is if you don't have any free pedal. In other words the bearing is touching the fingers on the pressure plate all the time. This may not help with your noise and you all probably already knew all of this, but I just wanted to clarify. ;)

I think the guys at amco are trying to pull a fast one on me

I was right.... I took it to a different shop and they said the egr block off plate was loose and cause a rattle.
