Busted a motor mount

Well,I went to a little play area behind my house with my bro and his friend. There is a big dirt pile, wityh very loose dirt.Well,I hit it in 4wd lo and it jumped up and came down perdy hard. Then I backed down and tried it again, and I hit even harder this time.Only to find that my jeep is making noises under the hood.So we look under, and my fan blade is hitting the shroud. So my dad looked at the motor mount, and it was busted. So for once the TJ pulled me home. And now the jeep is in the garage and the motor is oulled up and is loose.I hope we can get it fixxed by this weekend. But I doubt it.One good thing,I did make it up. 8) Sully

I had a thumping on bumps for years before I decided to check the motor mount. The kicker was that my wife said, "why don't you check that little rubbery thing that holds the engine down?" I told her that I already checked it and it was something much more complicated - later on, I discovered it was the little rubbery thing. A few hours of work and $7.99 for a motor mount from checker auto took care of years of thumping.

I haven't told my wife yet, but next time I might pull my head out of my manly ass and listen to her...

I came down pretty hard one day and completely busted the motor mount assembly in half. That is the part that is on the engine. The shitty die- cast that they make that out of is very easy to break. Anyway $125 later, I was back mudding again. Pretty scary to see your motor hanging there by one motor mount, huh?

yeah thank you for my oil filter too. That and my driver side motor mount held it up. And the funny thing was that my driver side mount was the bad one! THe rubber was missing

Same thing with me.My right mount broke, and my left one was holdig it,but the left one was not even bolted in! It was just floating there.Someone put that mount in wrong.

hehehe i hate when mounts break and things hang hehehehe like
U-joints it makes a horrible noise when your getting outta the trail and your front driveshaft is hanging there on the skid plate making all that noise

Talk about noises - I was out, I mean way out in the mountians on a little two track trail. One of the wires from the starter relay fell down on my headers, burned through, and set off my starter.

So here I was, going down a narrow, snowy, rutted grade and this loud grinding noise comes from my transmission. I dropped a brick in my pants thinking I shelled my transmission way in the middle of no where and like a dumb ass I didn't bring any basic survival gear.

So I turn it off and jump out and I can't figure out why the grinding noise is still going on. Well, my heart starts up again when I see the wire. I pull it off the headers, tape it up and out of the way - and if I didn't learn my lesson, I still go an hour or two deeper into the mountians before I turn around.

In any case, some noises at the wrong place and time can serve up a corinary...

All fixxed now.Rapid recovery for the jeep. :D Sully

Glad to hear you fixed it up so quick. Any ideas for upgrades in this area?? I always have dents in my oil filter from the flex of my mounts. The last guy had the right side upside down which makes a NICE hole in the filter. How he even screwed a filter on in the first place? I want to upgrade to urenthane mounts, but have heard bad things about them. And if there is a stronger stock engine mount braket I would like to know about that too. I have posted about this before and got no real help.
Any ideas?

Hello Keith,

RE: Motor Mount Upgrade

Here is a link to at least get you started on your quest for stronger motor mounts:

http://www.samsoffroad.com/samsoffroadsto/BombProofMotorMounts.htm

If you do a Google search on "More Bombproof Motor Mounts," you will get many additional hits to investigate as regards pricing, etc.

Many Jeep aftermarketers sell the “More” (TM) brand motor mounts.

I have no first-hand experience with these mounts, and they are pricey, but I thought it might serve some purpose to at least mention them.

Regards,

Gadget
