Brake drum Froze (rusted on)

RE: Feed Lindsay Lohan

Any advice on getting a rusted drum off ? The axle turns freely, brakes are not holding it there. I WD-40'd the piss out of it and tried tapping it with t large coaxer but it won't even budge.

Heat can help, but you might damage your outer axle seal or the wheel cylinder seal... those are easily replaceble though.

WD-40 is a penatrant of the past, nowadays only good for displacing water. Get some Kroyal or PB Blaster on.

When you put it back on, give it a layer of grease to prevent that next time.

I worked at a local Mineke for a few years, I do not recomend heat, it works both ways, expanding the metal in both directions, inside and outside diameter, making it lock on even harder sometimes. There is one tried and true method that works everytime, beating the holy hell out of it with a hammer, not on the outside diameter but only on the flat portion where the lugs come thru, go around in circles, may seem like your not getting anywhere but it will loosen up and come off that way after you rattle all the crap out of there thats holding it on.

RE: Re: "Ugliest Dog Crowned" (You

A big hammer and lots of good oil.

Heat does work if you know where exactly to heat, and how much heat to use. If used right, heat should pop that thing right off. If used wrong and it gets stuck even more, no big deal...once it cools it will 'shrink' back to how it was before.

Try a brake drum puller. Likely available for rental at AutoZone and similar.

You will be amazed.

PS: Were the "Tinnerman" (push-on) nuts removed from the wheel studs?

RE: yj is overheating again!!!

Yuppers, I used the BFH and a lot of WD-40 on mine. Took about 10 minutes of pounding before she finally let go.

yep those were removed

PB Blaster where the drum slips over the hub on the axleshaft. Then a BFH, usually get mine by rotating the drum while beating around the outside edge. Then a few good whacks inward on the axleshaft occasionally for good measure.

Youv'e done the right thing with the WD-40, and perhaps some liquid wrench. DO NOT USE HEAT.

Let sit, and this may be for as much as a week, keep soaking repatedly, and tapping often, gently, and it will free itself in about that time. Be patient. Or as suggested, in tanum with above, a break drum puller too.

I ended up using a wire wheel to get the rust off of the axle where it pokes througt the drum, a few good placed whacks & it was off.
Still have what sounds like a bearing noise at about 20 mph on, I thought it was coming from the rear but it's not, from the front somewhere. when you hit the brakes the noise doesn't change (that's weird to me) 1st 4wd vehicle I've ever owned so any ideas on what it may be? :?:

thanks a bunch

Another strange rattle

How does that drum puller work? Where does it grab the drum?

It actually grabs the frame and body from the opposite side and pulls them away from the drum, leaving it lying on the ground.....

I don't know if it will work on drums. When front rotors are rusted on, I found that if you drill some small, 1/8" or smaller, holes around the hub
and tap the outer edge of the rotor it will come off. If it doesn't come off, drill more holes. Some PB Blaster will help.

I have not looked at my drum brakes yet,but I know on other vehicles there is screws that hold the drum on,Did you remove all of them.Usually there is 3.It may sound dump, but always worth taking a double look.Besides that I use a 5lb axe where the back half is flat like a hammer and give it a few swings.

Oops I didnt look at the date,It came up with a new post so I commented on it..O well if they are not off yet they are never coming off.
