Best way to remove spring perches??

Hey all,

I need to get the perches off a set of D44s. Im swapping them into a YJ, so... they need to be moved in.

I have a air powrd cut off tool, but it will take forever! Other than that I thought about a Walmart Black & Decker 10K RPM Angle Grinder - $40.

Should i get the grinder?

Im not using them again, I purchased long perches for the new axles.

RE: Stripping paint

Whenever I need to cut something, I use the angle grinder. I've removed perches with them many times. When that wont fit, the recip saw is a good second choice. I have access to a plasma cutter, but I can't take it on jobs to get things done when I need.

I'm surprised Snitty - with a sig pic such as yours I expected a "torch 'em off" reply. :? :? LBR

yup.. then switch out from the cutoff wheel to a grinding wheel to finish it off

Ya, andle grinder with a cut-off wheel on it (with the help of a BFH). Then swap on a grinding wheel to clean it all up real good before you put the new perches on.

Okay, I'll be the knuckle dragger to suggest the torch route. Just don't point it at the tubes and work quick and you should avoid any damage to the housing or anything in it.
The amount of cleanup will depend on your torch skills. I usually fire up the torch before I'll go looking for(and set up) the plasma cutter, but they'll work great too.

Die grinder and a hammer works fine too, like already mentioned.

RE: Thinking of Buying another 4x4

I heated my housing with a torch then I used a plasma cutter to cut the perches off. Just have a bucket of water ready to wet rags right after you make your cuts. Dont want to warp your housing! Works good, then just grind off he left over bits on the axle.

RE: Spare Tire Carrier ???

Be carefull with water though. If the housing cools fast, it will loose strength...actually by quite a bit!!

If anything you want it to cool as slowly as possible. Same reason for pre AND post heating when welding on axle housings!
