Battery Doesn't Hold A Charge Overnight

Hello,

Very frustrated. My 98 Cherokee will not hold a charge over night. The first signs where the auto door locks stopped working consistantly. I have replaced the battery and the alternator. The fuses look good. I can jump start it, drive it around and it goes great (auto door locks don't work), I can turn it off and 30 mins later it will turn back on. But when I come back in the morning it is dead again. I even tried, on a suggestion, disconnecting the battery for a min of 30 minutes to reset the computer thinking maybe the computer was draining the battery by mistake...but it doesn't appear that it worked.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Matt

It sounds like you have a short somewhere in the system! Hope the problem is a simple one but electic problems never are it seems. Good luck and welcome to the board!

Make sure the battery cables, where they connect to the battery are clean, free of grease and tight. It´s been known to happen that the volt meter shows charge but there is resisitance at the battery due to poor contact.

They sell a gizmo that checks the specific gravity of the battery electrolite (water acid mix) real good for a quick trouble shoot of the battery and not really expensive. Doesn´t work on maintenance free batteries though.

Check the glove box and engine bay light and make sure they are turning off.

Do you do much off roading, what are the chances there is water where it shouldn´t be?

Make sure the rear window wiper is in the neutral position and not stuck. It will constantly try to zero even with the key off, in earlier models, don´t know for sure in the 98.

An easy test is to unhook the battery over night. If it cranks right over, it´s in the car, if it doesn´t, even new batteries have trouble from time to time.

You mentioned the auto door locks, my kids filled one off mine with Coke and it stuck in the closed posititon. Maybe one of yours is stuck.

Just a few things to look at, hope I´ve been helpful.

Do you have an amp for your stereo system???

My friend had an amp hooked up directly to his battery- and had

the same prob as you're having. He had to re-do his wiring.

Just an idea, trying to help.
