Basic question on engine oil

Hi guys,

I just bought a '96 Cherokee Sport and was hoping that you guys could help me out with some rudimentary questions - I'm quite a newbie in this and need to fix up quite a bit.

First off, my mechanic just replaced the engine oil with some semi-synthetic and I THINK its a little sluggish now. I'm wondering if there was a specific type that I should be using.

Also, my temperature went up really fast when I was caught in traffic in scorching noon sun, and my a/c went really hot as well. Had to switch it off for it to stabilize. When I got home, I found that I had to fill up about 0.5 to a litre of water in the radiator. Is the radiator that sensitive? My mechanic couldn't get it to overheat in the workshop after. Also, how does it affect the a/c?

I've also found a lot of leaks when we lifted the car up. Gearbox and transfer-case being just 2 out of about 4 places.

ARgh. Hope you guys are able to help. I live in a region where competent Jeep mechanics are rare.

Thanks!

Oh, forgot to mention that this is a 2.5L manual.

i run 20w-50 oil in mine, i don't think OIL would make your jeep seem sluggish unless he overfilled it A LOT.

jeeps are tough to keep cool. AC will kick the fan ON which will cool you down. also, turning the HEAT on will also cool it down a little. to diagnose your issue, start out by replacing your thermostat and see what happens. if you're still overheating look towards your mechanical fan clutch or possibly even the radiator. have you flushed it yet?

jeeps don't leak, they just mark their territory! looks like you're gonna have fun replacing gaskets and seals.

Hey,

Thanks a lot, Dingus. At least now I have a point to start checking things out. Nope, have not flushed out the radiator yet. Will do that next.

Like how regard the Jeep as marking its territory!

Thanks again!

I'd have to disagree with that statement.. i have over 166k on my GC and it doesn't leak. the only time i lost any fluids is when i blew a pinion seal...

yeah, my '94 XJ with 220k miles doesn't leak either.

i thought that the sports came with a 4.0 inline 6. i too have trouble keeping my jeep cool (stock) but thats cause theres a prob with the radiator. but i just thought i would bring that up cause i have a 2.5 inline with a 5 spd but its not a sport. and that the sports were 6's with autos
