Bang pop Crunch when putting it in 4x4

My differentals and my transfer case fluids were just changed, they were so dirty that I wouldnt put in 4 wheel just as a caution. but lately when I pull the 4x4 lever it sounds REALLY bad. this only happened occasionally before, but now im almost afraid to do it on the fly. It makes almost the same sound as missing a shift.

Does it only happen in 4LO or 4HI? You can shift on the fly into 4HI up to 55 mph. To shift into 4LO, you can be traveling no more than 3 mph. Furthermore, you need to put the transmission in neutral when shifting to 4LO. Failure to do so will result in it not locking into gear and then the gears are just spinning when you step on the gas.

One thing I always try to do is step on the clutch when shifting the transfer-case, it has seemed to make shifts smoother. That way I hope to prevent my Transfer case from going snap, crackle, pop

also, when if you are moving while shifting.. make sure the wheels are not spinning... if the rears are spinning, and the fronts are stationary... the front axle will be spinning at the speed of the rear axle.. and the disconnected part will be sitting, waiting for a spinning shaft to be engaged to it. that could be the slam
