AX5 fill plug

Hey guys,

I've been watching the board for quite a while now, and I think I'm finally worthy of posting. Anyway, quick question:

Any tips on removing the fill plug on the AX5 tranmission? It's in such a bad spot, and I just can't seem to get my adjustable in the right position to get it off.

Thanks.

Some people say you can fill it from the driver side , that torx bolt that says do not remove.

I would never do it tho.

Don't use an adjustable, use a socket, 15/16th's sounds familiar.

Thanks Dave,

I wouldn't touch the other one either (driver's side torx), but it would be a hell of a lot easier to get to. I thought about a socket wrench, but it looks too tight to maneuver in there. I'll give it a try.

I feel you pain. I filled mine before raising the transmission into position the last time I had it out.

Make sure you use the correct fluid, the factory recommended GL5 will eat your synchronizers up. Are you familiar with this issue?

Bounty,

Yeah, I wasn't able to get Redline, so I'm using Pennzoil Synchromesh. This is my first transmission fluid change since I got the Jeep used this past summer, so I have no idea what's in there right now. Hopefully it's not GL-5.

Thanks for the sympathy :)

if you are goin through all the trouble, might as well drop in the redline mt90, or syncromesh by penzoil ( which i used on my ax5 with great results). let us know how it turns out. Also, do you have some sort of pump to get the gear oil in there?

Yeah I have a few different things--pump bottle, hand pump, tubing. I'm t going to experiment and see what works best.

I used a 1" knockout set to put a hole in the transmission tunnel cover. Bought a couple feet of 1/2" clear vinyl tubing from Home Depot and slipped it over the tapered nipple on the bottle. I would remove the plug and run the hose down through the hole in the shifter plate and into the hole in the transmission. I had to change my fluid every month though, and I had a 3" body lift so I had plenty of clearance to work around the transmission.
