Alternator Recommendations?

Howdy, peeps...
I just finished getting myself all filthy replacing the belts on my 258, and i think its about time for a new alternator.
Currently i have the stock 56A piece of crap that can barely power my fog lights and headlights at the same time (especially after installing the TFI ignition upgrade)

I'd like to stick in a higher power alternator, but i'm not too familiar with which models are preffered amongst jeepers.

Also, I'm not entirely sure if there are other electrical modifications necesary when you up the amperage on your alternator...

Well, if you plan to draw more amperage by installing more electrical components, you'll need larger gauge wire, in addition to properly sized fuses for that wire.

If your just installing a new alternator, you shouldn't need any other modifications.

i remember seeing a high output alternator on ebay for a good price... but i'm looking now and dont see one... it was like a 160A for like $129... some company was winding them, and could wind for different outputs for other prices too

wierd jeeps

Mean Green. 140 amps w/internal voltage regulator. Heavy duty workhorse with no modifications needed. I have it and the Mean Green starter on my CJ7. Very satisfied with both.

JC Whitney sells a kit for your stock AC Delco alternator that will get you up around 160A, fairly cheap. I've used it, doesn't do much for increasing amperage at idle, you have to be over 1000rpm before it really starts making power. Easy to rebuild yourself with this kit.

Get out the local phone book and look up auto electric. them small shops can make up some mean alternators for a really fair price. The one I had on Jeezabell was pumping 160 amps and never had a kc flicker or dim with the stereo cb all the lights and no change on the meter. I got it made up for a wopping 46 bucks. and my old one. The guys there found it a labor or pride to build up a monster like that for me. How they did what they did I never even bothered to ask! hehehehe Tug
