adjusting power steering gain

Hello all,

I have a '93 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4D, 4WD with power steering. I want to increase the adjustment gain on the power steering as to reduce the torque needed to turn the steering wheel. I know that on several japanese cars the power steering is adjustable, but I am unable to find the way to adjust it.

I have the Haynes repair manual and it says nothing about the topic. I have looked at the power steering assembly from above and below and there isn't an obvious way to tune it. I want to bring the torque needed down as much as possible.

There is a bolt on the power steering pump that you loosen and then adjust with an alan wrench. But over doing it can result in your steering wheel not recentering. I believe the bolt is on the top of the pump, and you should see an alan wrench or torx socket in the middle of it.

RE: Okay, THAT freaked me out!

There is no adjustment on the pump or box that I know of to increase the advantage. The post 91 XJ´s seem to have a stiffer steering, which is supposed to actually help some, in high speed driving.
There are some alternate steering boxes available.
A larger steering wheel will help, but will probably get in the way.
There are really no adjustments on the steering box that can be done correctly, with the box still mounted. It has to be removed and adjusted on the bench.

I think a smaller pulley would make the pump spin faster.... you'd need a larger pulley to slow it down.

If the pump spun faster at any given time, that would make it require less effort from the driver to turn the steering wheel...which I think is what he wants?? The power steering would have more "power" with it pumping faster.

Hi,

I don't know, they were talking about "loose" steering. Sounds to me like they have too much power assist? That's why they'd want a larger pulley; to slow the pump down and provide less assist.
