AC help!

I know somebody is going to give me $hit about using my AC, but I live in South TX, and it's hotter than hell, so help me out. My AC on my 95 YJ suddenly stops cooling after being on for a while. It seems to have plenty of R134-A in it, or at least that is what the gauge shows. What else could be wrong. Before it started doing this, the AC unit inside would "sweat" a lot all of a suddent when it would stop cooling. I really can't afford a mechanic right now, and it's only getting hotter. I think I am going to have to find a place to store my hardtop for the summer if I can't fix this soon. A black hard top in TX heat is not fun. Let me know what I can do to diagnose this problem. Sorry to hear about your ac trouble. I have no idea what it could be, but felt bad that no one has answered your post. I hope you can find the answer soon.

I´ll try and help as much as I can. Not having a schematic of the 95 AC system handy. I can give you some general tips.
With the motor stopped find the show glass, a little glass window on the high side (small line) usually on the out side of the heat exchanger (radiator in the front). Start up the motor and have a friend engauge the AC (with the doors shut) watch and see if the little window fills up with freon (or half full)(freon is colorless so you have to pay attention) after the AC runs for awhile watch and see if the level falls significantly. Freon condenses some (shrinks) when it gets cold and will shut down the pump, when the pressure falls below a certain level.
If the freon level stays up and the pump shuts down before, the vehicle gets cold. It is often a fualty thermostat. Usually somewhere near the condensor (radiator inside the vehicle). If the drain hose for the pan under the condensor is plugged, it will sometimes freeze up, part of the condensor and fool the thermostat into thinking the inside of the vehicle is cold enough.
Low freon will shut down the compressor, high freon pressure will shut down the compressor (air in the system or plugged heat exchanger, front radiator), faulty thermostat or frozen thermostat will shut down the compressor. There are some other things that can cause problems, but these are the most common.[addsig]

Hey dude I just wanted to say I know where youre coming from. Im from S Tx also and I have a 92 YJ with a soft top. I could hardly get cool on those long hot drives along the coast even with the AC running full blast. So to fix the problem, I took a job that transferred me to northern Montana. Now I freeze my ass off in the winter instead of sweating in the summer! [addsig]

Find the thermostat ... jump it .. sounds like your compressor is shutting
off. High head or low suction will shut it off, if your charge is right like you
say it is, that should not be the problem.[addsig]

Thanks brent. I've had a replacement thermostat for about a month now, but I just have not had time to change it. I will update as soon as I get that changed.-Al[addsig]

LMAO   well the easiest way to get there is
once you get into Houston take 45 N to 2920 in Spring
and it's just a couple of min down that road...But I think we might
meet up and grab lunch at Hooters first ..... :-D but like I said we can
meet you some place first and all head that way ...would you be coming from
Corpus or Arlington???

Sounds good. So how tough is this trail. Your Jeep does not seem to have major mods, so I am assuming that the trail is not too bad. My Jeep has no major mods YET, but I am sure it can handle it fine.-Al[addsig]
