AC Compressor troubles....

I have a squeal(best way to describe the noise) coming from my compressor pulley. Sprayed it down(the inside of the pulley, not the belt) with some liquid wrench and the noise lessened. Seems like the pulley was about to seize up so i sprayed it to prevent total carnage in the engine. Is this a common occurance. What am i looking at here. I made an appt with the stealership to have them check it out. Is it just a lube job, can i do this myself? BTW, the ac works just fine.

My mom had the same problem with her '98 Caravan... It was an intermittent squeal when the air was on, sounded like the belt, but was not... Air worked just fine. She ended up having to have the compressor replaced... Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, and of course, this may not be the case, but that's my 2 cents anyway...

Hi,

It is likely a bearing in the air conditioning compressor seizing up. The drive belt is squealing due to the increased force required to turn the compressor, which the belt can only handle to a point.

I'd be VERY careful about running it until you have it fixed (or at least looked at by a CERTIFIED A/C shop).

If that compressor seizes while running, it could be very interesting

Do what I did. throw out the whole AC unit and install a pulley in place. Nice noticeable power/torque gains from it.
Hot summer days - just rent a convertible ;)

Turn it into a OBA system!

Though, he'd have the exact same problem if a bearing is shot in the compressor. I suppose it wouldn't be as bad since OBA doesn't reach the pressure of an A/C system's high side, but could still cause problems.

Ya, but it would no longer be a ac problem!

it was a joke, get it!
You had already answered his problem, so I was tryingt o add a little banter! Plus, he has yet to take that XJ offroad with me so he need some good ribbing!

Turned out to be the radiator fan pulley! Yay for not being the compressor! Thx god i got it fixed b4 it seized.

Should be gettin my meats this week or next. Soon as i get a hitch and front hooks i'll be lookin good.

Problem solved, thanks for the help .... and the banter courtesy of johnny.
