A few glitches after motorcraft and hei swap

I finished swapping in my hei and motorcraft carb in my cj today. It idled better than the carter, which basically means it idled, but i did notice some problems. At first it would backfire ALOT, with flames shooting out of the carb, until I adjusted the float levels and plugged a pcv port I had yet to buy hose for to hook up. It started to not backfire after some tweeking, but after a 10 min drive I noticed some problems with power/throttle response (it sucked) and when I pulled in my garage the exhaust manifold was GLOWING...I'm guessing that that is not good. I'm pretty sure the timing is good, but don't know for sure about the richness. Is an improper fuel/air ratio to blame?
 

My guess would be a major air leak somewhere. Probably around the bottom of the carb after the butterflies. Manifold leak, carb base, etc. The one I tried to use had what looked like a relay contact on the top of the carb that was a direct hole to the bottom of the carb. I plugged that and it ran better but I finally gave up and put the Weber back on. I never could get it to idle right.
