98XJ Transmission Problems

Well, I took the XJ into the shop today and here is what they are saying is wrong and the prices. I would appreciate somebody telling me if the prices sound fair and if all the work is necessary. Thanks, KJ

Trans Cooler Lines 96.10 and 84.50, Labor 97.50 Total=278.10
Trans Ft Pump Seal- 21.10 parts, Labor 357.50 Total=378.60
Trans Pan Gasket- 14.70 parts, Labor 97.80 Total= 112.20
Oil Pressure Switch- parts 23.50 Labor 65.00 Total= 88.50

They told me the switch needs to be changed out because my oil pressure is running low. They stated at an idle, it should be around 40 but it's actually running around 30ish. This Labor is outrageous, but I guess when it comes to the Transmission. I am definitely not mechanically inclined but with prices like this it almost makes me want to try. Any Help. Thanks Folks.

Well at least it's only seals and gaskets and the transmission is mechanically sound.

I can see the gasket and seal... did they say what was wrong with the cooler lines?

I changed my F-150's transmission fluid and filter recently in my driveway and im almost 17 (8 more days) and im not very skilled if i can do it anyone can. and transmission lines are no problem to do on my truck. i havent had to do it to my cherokee yet ( i also dont have a transmission in it yet either ) if you have even the slightest skills when working on vehicles you could do this in your driveway fairly easy. just make sure you use 4 jackstands and a creeper would be nice. as for the oil pressure switch i have no idea how hard it would be to do it.

the prices aren't bad compared to some shops mainly the dealer. do they warranty their work? it seems like labor is what's costing you the most. if u do it yourself u could make it worse or break something important costing u more. i have been working on cars for 7yrs now, if u aren't sure about what you are doing it is best to leave it to the professionals.

Theres only 2 shops near the town that i live in that i trust, because my dad's buddys own them. I would only bring my truck to a place where everyone is ase certified, i know a kid thats the same age as me that works at a shop and doesnt know crap about working on cars, he chenges oil, transmission fluid, and does front end alignments, and hes in my auto shop class half the time he puts his 90's (lifted) Geo Tracker (with 31's) (dumbest truck in minnesota) and cant decide if what he is doing is right. . . i dont know about you but i only trust people i know working on my truck or me doing it. i dont want some junior in highschool messing up my ride. (and yes im a junior in highschool also)

oil pressure switch is located right above your oil filter. simple adjustable wrench will have that bad boy swapped out in 30 seconds. cake walk. but it won't raise your oil pressure unless your current one is leaking....

as for the transmission stuff, i'd tear into that myself too... take your time and note where everything goes. if it came apart, it'll go back together.

oh, this is UNLESS you have to drop the transmission to replace that pump seal... i wouldn't bother with that myself...
