I've swapped in 231s and 242s into ZJs to replace the problematic 249. Since it's a 98 it'll have the 42RE transmission so find another ZJ from 94-98 for a doner. The one's I've swapped were both 93s and had the AW4 transmission just like a XJ so it was a little easier to find. You may be able to use a case from an XJ, never tried but you'll need one with a 23 spline input, 91 and later, and match the length. Drive shafts will bolt up to the new case.
