'98 G Cherokee gauge cluster, functions now and again?

hi, i have a strange problem with my Cherokee and live in Costa Rica, where little tech service is available. I have a Haynes manual, but the wiring diagrams are usless. any help anyone here could give me would be Very Much Appreciated!!!

my gauge cluster started working intermitently about 6 months ago. Upon starting, the ABS light always cycles, but rarely the normal warning lights and functioning gauges. sometimes, down the road, the cluster will start working. normaly, after stop and restart, the cluster will be out again. the out time now exceeds the on time. another strange issue is that normally the power windows will not work, up or down, unless i click the electric door lock, lock-unlock, a couple of times.

Thanks!

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER

All of the gauges and many of the indicator lamps in the instrument cluster are controlled by messages received by the instrument cluster circuitry on the CCD data bus. Only the cluster illumination lamps, anti-lock brake system lamp, turn signal indicator lamps, and the master lighting indicator lamp (if the vehicle is so equipped) are hard-wired in the gauge cluster.
If an individual gauge or lamp is inoperative, see the diagnostic procedure under the heading for that gauge or lamp. For circuit descriptions and diagrams, Refer to Instrument Cluster in Wiring Diagrams. If more than one gauge or lamp is inoperative, perform the following:
WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIRBAGS, Refer to PASSIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEMS BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.
 1. Check the fuses in the junction block module. If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK, repair the shorted circuit or component as required and replace the faulty fuse.
 2. Check for battery voltage at the fused B+ fuse in the junction block. If OK, go to Step 3. If not OK, repair the open circuit to the fuse in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) as required.
 3. Turn the ignition switch to the On position. Check for battery voltage at the fused ignition switch output (start/run) fuse in the junction block. If OK, go to Step 4. If not OK, repair the open circuit to the fuse in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) as required.
 4. Turn the ignition switch to the Off position. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Remove the instrument cluster as described in this group. Connect the battery negative cable. Check for battery voltage at the fused B(+) circuit cavity of the instrument cluster wire harness connector. If OK, go to Step 5. If not OK, repair the open circuit from the fuse in the junction block as required.
 5. Turn the ignition switch to the On position. Check for battery voltage at the fused ignition switch output (start/run) circuit cavity of the instrument cluster wire harness connector. If OK, go to Step 6. If not OK, repair the open circuit from the fuse in the junction block as required.
 6. Turn the ignition switch to the Off position. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Probe each of the ground circuit cavities of the instrument cluster wire harness connector. Check for continuity to a good ground. There should be continuity. If OK, refer to the proper Diagnostic Procedures manual for further testing of the instrument cluster circuitry and the CCD data bus . If not OK, repair the open circuit(s) to ground as required.

Hi,
Thanks for the procedure! Do you have any suggestions on where to find a good wiring diagram for the 98 Cherokee?

Thanks,
John

Before i forget, there has been issues with the circuit on the PDC(Power Distribution Center) where there was an intermittent open under the PDC box. If your able to duplicate the concern, tap or wiggle the harness going to the PDC and see if that makes a difference.

Hi,

Thank-you very much for the help. I will check it out this weekend. Because it is intemittent, I am sure it will be fun!

Hi again,
My cluster worked flawlessly for may days and then I was in in the states for a few weeks. Now it does not work again, and I went through the total test procedure and I have no ground at the number on pin in the cluster harness. Everything else checks out fine. I do not know where to go to find the ground origin? This vehicle is from Canada and fuse/relay box is much larger than what is show for a '98, and is located in the right kick panel. Also, the vehicle has been run on the beach and has had the floor boards wet with salt water. Also, when the power windows work without having to click the power door locks while holding the window switch on(to get them up or down), the cluster works. I suspect something as simple as a ground, but have no idea where to look??? Any help that you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! John
