97 v8 grand cherokee trans. problem

I am looking at buying a 97 grand cherokee with a v8 from a lady for $1800 or maybe less. It has a skyjacker flex system, 32's and alot of other part's. The problem, from what her nephew said is that when you put it in drive it just jerk's. I just wanted to know where I should begin looking. I found a transmission in a salvage yard for $450, but just wanted someone else's input.

Go find one out of a junkyard cheaper that way
