97 6 cyl TJ stalls can anyone help?

Hey guys maybe someone can point me in the right direction, never had this problem before maybe some one out there did. Its pretty cold up here in NY and for the last couple of weeks about once a week when driving (on the highway with the heat on after being on the road for over 20 min) my engine just dies and I cruise to a stop. The battery is fine the headlights are strong. When i try to restart it either it dies right away or drives for a few seconds and then dies, revving it has no effect cant keep it going. It doesnt help to let it rest, no matter what within 15-30 min later it starts up again no problem (so far) but id really like to figure out whats going on its not very dependable as it is. Thinking i had some fuel issues since it first happened with only a quarter tank i bought some dry gas/cleaner but it happened again with more than half a tank this time and after adding it. Took it to the mechanic he had it running most of the day no problems no check engine light comes on so he says he cant diagnose it. It just had a tune up done about a month and a half ago by a shop that I think does only tuneups so I dont think they screwed up anything, the plugs, cables, distrib cap etc were replaced and it runs great otherwise. The problem is I seem to have these problems always at night when no service station is open bad luck I guess I dont think its the coldest we've had some colder days and had no problems with it. Anyone have an idea whats going on or what to check? Thanks

I was going to suggest condensation in the gas tank/fuel lines, but you said you tried the de-icer. Is there snow or a lot of moisture on the roadway or being kicked into the air, possibly into the air intake? I had that problem with my old toy after a lot of the vacuum lines and such had deteriorated, and the snow/moisture was actually freezing the carb and butterflies. Aside from that, I can't think of anything else.

I'd recommend replacing the catalytic converter. Sounds like it's bad, and heating up causes the catalyst to expand, choking the engine to the point of dying. After it cools, you stated 30min, it runs fine. If it's bad, the stealership will replace it for free if your within 8yr/80K miles.

thanks for the suggestions ill see if i can get those things checked out, it actually happened again at warmer temps (above 35) again at night so i pulled into strauss but they were just closing and told me to come back the next day which was pointless since i wouldnt have the problem then. to answer your questions theres nothing really left on the roads like snow theyre dry by now. the catalytic converter was replaced but the exhaust people told me the temps are too high and i need a tune up or it will be damaged so i got the tune up done pretty much right away, maybe not soon enough. it may be just a coincidence but after shutting off the heat inside the problem didnt seem to last as long as usual just a couple of minutes, maybe an electrical issue on that circuit? ill have to see if it helps again next time
thanks guys

RE: shot gun seat

If you still needed a tuneup with the new cat, it's possible you ruined it before the tuneup. It's easy to have somebody check the cat temp with an infrared thermometer.

Been down a similar path on a 97 4.0 that belongs to my son! ... checked/replaced crank sensor etc. ... In the end, I found where wiring had backed out (inside of the plastic connector) and was not making reliable connection at the distributor. One key to my problem was the fact that after it died if I did not turn the key all the way to off and then back to on/start it would spin but not start. By turning the key to off allows onboard electronics to reset after the distributor fault. So, if your rig will restart without first turning the key to off this will probably not help.

RE: Cheap 4X4

I was wondering what you guys think of the latest developments. Let me quickly go through the whole thing from the beginning: bought the Jeep in june of last year, had on a turbo muffler, wouldnt pass inspection, cat converter was either replaced or put in, then the muffler was replaced by a stock one. That muffler got burned up so I was told to get a tune up as soon as the new muffler is put in so it doesnt get damaged, did that, had rotor, cap, cables, plugs, air filter replaced. A while later came the stalling problems (possibly to do with a damaged cat that wasnt replaced). Those stalling issues seem to have gone away but got an engine check that stayed on for 5 days and went away but they read it from memory- P306- told me cyl 6 is misfiring, erratic idle, cat converter not working, and new muffler is garbage from the excessive heat. I was told the oxygen sensors, cat, and muffler can be replaced for a considerable sum but if the original issue isnt fixed theyll be toast in 2 or 3 months again. Took it to the tune up place and nothing shows up wrong, the components put in during tune up are ok and error code only shows in history. Someone mentioned a possible vacuum leak etc but nothing shows. Any suggestions? Do I take it somewhere else and tell them to look for something specifically? Dont really want to invest in an entire exhaust (including muffler #3 because the geniuses at Strauss crushed it lifting the Jeep), if it wont even make it to inspection in july.
