92 jeep cherokee laredo transmission problem?

I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4WD 4.0 automatic. I love my car and other than general maintenance, I have never had a problem with it. A few days ago I was crossing over a mountain pass on my way home and the Jeep suddenly began to lose power 70mph to 50 to30 until finally we pulled into a gas station and stopped. We checked the Transmission fluid it was fine, thought maybe we had water in the gas so we filled up with premium gas and a fuel injector cleaner and decided to continue on. The Jeep would not shift into Drive or Overdrive and we rolled along at about 30 mph until we came to a hill and then we stopped. We had a 2 hour drive ahead of us and after letting engine rest we managed to get over the hill and later got a ride home and towed the Jeep back the next day. The jeep would drive at 25-30 mph but it steadily got worse .Now it won't even start. People have told me it could be the vacumn ejector line by the transmission or I should change the transmission filter,or it could be the bands in the transmission .? Can anyone help with a suggestion or perhaps, has had the same problem, I would really appreciate it?

Did the engine seem to rev fine and the transmission was preventing the jeep from moving properly?

When this issue occurs, What's the highest speed and RPM can you get it to go?also, does it Rev up normal on Neutral and bog's down at around 25-30 mph in gear?.

In Drive I can get it to around 1600 and in Neutral it will rev up normal but yes it bogs down at 25-30 mph in gear. Right now a friend of mine is changing the transmissiion filter, do you think this might help ? The transmission fluid that came out is dark brown.

yes the engine seems to rev fine but the transmission isn't letting it move.

My experience with a plugged catalytic converter is it gradually chokes the engine more and more as it heats up, and will work fine if allowed to cool completely. I believe it's the catalyst heating up and cooling that restricts air flow.

I think you may be right because as soon as I read your reply, my friend came in from changing my transmission filter and said the Catalytic converter looks really bad. There is carbon all over the bottom of it.How do I check to see if its good or not and How much does it cost to replace? Tell me it is not as much as having the transmission replaced? Is it? By the way thank you so much for figuring out my problem, I appreciate it!

I need to know if there is anything you can do to unplug the catalytic converter, or do you just need to replace it ? Is there any way to check it to see if this is the problem and how much do they usually cost? Any information would be helpful, because I am not knowledgeable abouit cars at all. Thank you

Unplugging a Catalytic converter? no, Replace the Cat. Converter? Yes. One way to check for a bad cat. conv. is to check the back pressure. A well experienced Mechanic should be able to that for you. Another way is to install a ScanTool capable of monitoring Temp., O2 sensor readings and the knowlege of reading the Adaptive numerators from the scantool, along with an infrared thermometer you should be able to determine if the Cat. conv. is plugged or not. In the worse case of a plugged cat. Conv., the converter would actually Glow a cherry red in the dark when the engine is warmed up to its normal operating temperature. Cost?, you can check at Quadratech, 4WD Hardware ,Jegs or a local muffler shop.
