90 cherokee engine

i just got a 90 xj for $150 dollers but it needs an engine. will a newer 4.0 work and if how new can i go to get lower mileage

crate eng gives 0 miles
or just check local junk yards for a low mileage eng think up to 94 before comp/harness changes

As far as I know 87-90 (Renix), 91-95 (a few 96 1/2) OBD 1. With some minor changes in the Renix harness over the years, the components and sensors stayed mostly the same. A few more changes in the OBD 1 series in the harnesses and some components over the years (If I remember correctly in 93 and 95 there were some notable changes).
I've never noticed any significant mileage difference between my 88 and my 96.
