89 yj stock carb problems

hi there,i bought a 89 jeep yj box stock from a friend at work.they had it for 17 years,its real clean.i got it for 500.00 to fix up for my granddaughter. ok the problem is that carter carb,i get up to 3000rpms on the road and its like someone hit kill switch(no pickup and go)i spent hours reading nutter bypass forums.i can do this no problem.my question is,is this the best way to do this without going over board? its her first jeep.any help would great! thanks:?::???:

you probably found that write up about clipping the wires and then hooking them to ecu and the distributor? that is what i did, works fine. mine had a weer on it so i wasn't having all the trouble you guys have but i am able to idle below 1k now

a nutter is a great mod for the problematic carter bbd, but have you ruled out other causes? . how is your idle ? I would do a good tune up and then the nutter. For the low cost of doing away with the computer , it cant hurt to start there. After i did the nutter i changed to a motorcraft 2150 carb from the local boneyard. $15.00 and a $12.00 adapter . it did require a little linkage fabbing, but all in all the idle was great and the milage improved ! acceleration and top end good too.

so the motorcraft won't bolt directly to our intake? i have one sitting in the shed awaiting a rebuild to throw onto my jeep

thank you for the info,that is what i am going to to,the jeep is so box stock i have room to do 2100 motorcraft carb too,its for my granddaughter,not going crazy on this. thankyou

I just got done the Motorcraft 2100, Nutter Bypass, and manual choke. The Jeep is a completely different beast! Wonderfull improvment in start up, idling, power through the gears, and a real nice improvment in gas mileage.

Now, it is no Chev 454 engine, but overall I nice improvement. Your investment would quickly return in gas savings and tinkering with the Carter Carb all the time.

google nutter bypass and an article by john nutter will guide you through a procedure to take the computer and troublesome bbd lean burn system out. it works well for most.

i just did the nutter bypass on my 89 yj,and it works great!had to advance the timming more than shown, but other than that its a totaly different jeep!
