87 wagoneer. still got problems

i have a 1987 jeep wagoneer 4.0 I6 with a 5spd manual. and im having problems with power and i have a violent shaking whenever i try to accelerate.


i got new plugs thursday, everything gapped properly, everything wired correctly.

i got new cap, rotor and plug wires today, everything wired again poperly.

but i still have no power. 1-3rd gear i accelerate very slowly, cab shaking slightly. when i hit 35MPH and shift into 4th gear, it doesnt matter how hard im pushing the gas down, it will not accelerate.

i called the local parts store and they think that i might hvae a leak in my exhaust manifold, but it doesnt make sense.


any help is appreciated

If it's equipped with a catalytic converter, i would check that. It might be plugged up.

you nailed it right on the head! i hit a hill going to my mechanics and when i hit the hill i dropped it a gear and planted my foot on the gas and a few seconds later i heard and felt a massive pop from my exhaust and my jeep took off like a rocket again. god i love the 4 liter

i had the same thing happen to me about 2 years ago. couldnt figure it out till the guts of the cat blew out and clogged my muffler which then blew a hole in the side of the muffler.. i did the cheap fix a 40 seris flowmaster and no cat..
