In the local paper, there was a 68cj5 advertised for sale for 1750 dollars, claims to have 9500 original miles,6 cyl with a plow for snow, said motor runs fine but has some other issues such as the clutch linkige needs fixed.havent seen it yet, gonna look at it this weekend. whats your thoughts about the price.

I think if you know how to work on vehicles well it sounds like a deal.. But on the other hand for someone who doesn't, they'll be spending their income taxes on mechanic bills. Just my opinion. =]

What 6 cyl engine? It should be a Dauntless V6 not a I6. Steering should be a Ross style which can have a lot of slop in them. Axles should be D44 rear, D27 front, with small drum brakes all around, trans is a T90 3spd with a Dana 18 t-case. Original 9500mi, I doubt it very much.
Look at the front frame horns they get bent, also look at the rear frame crosmember they rust badly. Floors and tub support channels are usually rusted out.
$1750 is high. Unless he has some hard to get PTO options or farming implements that go with it I think $1200 is tops for a running driving cj non restored of that vintage. I do not think the snow plow adds anything to it as far as value.

I would say a 43 year old vehicle with less than 10,000 miles for under $2000 sounds too good to be true. My gut instinct is that there is a catch somewhere...

Are you sure the mileage is not 110,000.00? As I recall, most odometers in 68 only registered to 99,999.9 before rolling over.

My experience is that running and functional Jeeps hit a bottom price and don't drop further. So the price sounds ok, but remember, the vehicle is 42 years old and you should plan to spend a lot of money to keep it functional. Working on an old Jeep can be fun, so maybe it will be worth it.

But, you should also consider spending a few more thousands and getting something much newer and with fewer issues.

Finally, I'd be concerned about any vehicle used to plow snow. It puts a lot of strain on the frame and running gear. So be prepared.

with out actually looking at it, you can't really make a determination.

the plow will also drop the value, don't let someone tell you it increases it because now you can plow your driveway, a heavy plow is murder to older vehicles, especially when they are so suseptable to rust. running driving, rust free I'd pay $1500, add rust, price drops quick. frame rust, price drops even more.

Thanks for the info folks,i'm gonna check it out, I'll post some pics of what I run into.

If it's been used strictly as a plow truck then the 9500 miles could be legit. But it would be a hard 9500 miles and probably everything will need rebuilt. Plowing can bend frames too.

I was thinking about that being the situation, went to check it out today, and it had been sold. got to thinking <I want a second jeep, but I think I need to concentrate on getting one with parts that well interchange with my 91 yj . I love my yj,but I alsoneed smething like an xj that has plenty of room for gear, have to do a little research to figure out what would be the best second jeep to get. Hey, you all, thanks a lot for your input.
