5th gear

alright,
so last night I went on the highway to go home. 2 days prior I had driven on the highway and the jeep drove fine, but last night everything was fine until i tried to shift to 5th gear. It seemed as if 5th did not exist. in fact i didnt even have to push the clutch and it would go into 5th but wouldn't work. Any ideas what might have happened? and how

Guessing your jeep has the 4cyl engine. It's very common for the clip to break holding 5th gear in place, allowing the gear to slide on the shaft. You can have the clip replaced but it will likely happen again unless the transmission is rebuilt with new synchronizers.

And if you have the 4 banger, what's the problem???? I've got an '03 with the 4 banger and can't remember the last time I put it in 5th......or even why I did it. Don't know why Jeep put a 5th in the transmission.

Keep in mind the broken pieces of clip are loose inside the transmission. Chances are they will stay at the bottom but its risky.

Be sure you're not running a GL5 gear oil in the transmission, your synchronizers will continue to deteriorate.

Hey Bounty, not meaning to hijack the thread. I'm just curious what the synchros have to do with the fifth gear snap ring. I'm not questioning your answer, just curious as to the reasoning. I'm by no means an expert mechanic and always want to learn more.
