4X4 engagement issues

On my 95 yj the other day the four wheel drive wouldnt engage in high or low after backing up a little ways, though the indicator light said I was! after spinning a little it started to grind and finally engaged! Could the linkage cable need adjusting? There is a little play but this is my first jeep so i dont know what is normal? Thanks for the advice!

The indicator light is only telling you the front axle disconnect is engaged. The lever on the floor actually engages the 4wd in the transfer case. Sounds like either the transfer case linkage needs adjusted or there is a problem inside the transfer case.

Look beneath the jeep and above the skidplate on the drivers side, you will see the transfer case linkage rod. There is a nut near one end of the rod that you can loosen in order to adjust the shift rod.

I would also recommend changing the fluid in the transfer case if you never have. It could be contaminated and/or low.

Thanks for the reply! Should I put the lever in neutral before i adjust on the linkage rod or just go ahead and do it while it is in gear? Thanks!
