4wd sticking

When I pull up on the lever to engage 4-hi everything works just fine like factory but when I push it back down it doesn't disengage :/ I have to do some crazy swerving to get it back into 2wd... a month ago it would work perfect with no problems & you could hear the t-case go back to 2wd & I have NOT been wheeling since then so this is a recent SEEMINGLY non-off road incident... any advice :/ Oh & do all the newer TJ ('03-'06) have the extended skid plate up front for the transmission or is it just for the automatic trans only?

I would check for: correct fluid level, get underneth and look at the linkage movement and engagement during shifting to see if there is any sloppy movement (engine off someone shift while the other looks).

Consider changing the ATF in the transfer case and see if it improves. If not, may be time to rebuild the transfer case and check for worn parts.

Yes only the newer automatics have the extra skidplate (shovel).

There's ATF in the t-case? I'll check on that... it's not leaking or anything but I'll still look
