4.56 or 4.88 Randy's Gears????

My question is that I have been reading about installing either 4.56 gears or 4.88 gears to compensate for the 33x12.50 tires I have. I realize as I read comments on the bogging down and slow down that the tires have on the vehicle that mine is the same. I have a 04 Rubi and was wondering which one I should install and will it make a great difference.

it's hard to say. If you plan on upgrading to 35's eventually, then the 4.88's are going to help out quite a bit there. But those are a bit tough on the freeway. If you don't intend on doing too much high speed driving i'd go 4.88. Are you auto or stick? If manual, definetly 4.56.

4.56 is good all around IMO. I have 4.10's in my TJ, and I wish I had the 4.56 gears that are in my XJ. (both are auto.)

If you are staying with 33's 4.56s are a choice but if you plan bigger down the road go with the 4.88s.

If it's a daily driver I wouldn't change them at all. THe Rubi has a nice 4WD low range so offroad should be no problem, but re-gearing from 4.10 gears to 4.56 won't make much difference and 4.88's will kill you on fuel economy and it'll be screaming on the highway.

If it's just a toy then 4.88's.

It is a stick and I plan on down the road to put 35's or 37's on it. I don't do alot of freeway miles, but I live on the north part of the city and accasionally hit the freeway, and I quess I am the kind of person that doesn't want to cut corners and if it will benefit my Rubi, then I go for it. The reason I ask is because I just installed a 3.5 rubicon express with all the bells and whistles and there r a few roads that I can't climb like I used to unless I down shift, and I know it is because of the 33's. How much money do the normally cost and is it something I can install or do I need to have a tech do it. Thanks 4 all the advise.

One more thing is that I only do about max speed of 60 on the freeway.

If you are going to do it then go with the 4.88 ratio. You should pay to have it done if you are unfamiliar or can't get someone who knows what they are doing to help you.

We had the same setup on our rubi. Well we had 37's with 4.88's and it pulled it around fine on and off road. Currently we have 35's on it just because the 37's were too big for the rubi dana 44's. 35's are my favorite with 4.88 and the 5spd. They have great torque and cruise nicely on the highway @ 75. I say skip the 4.56 and go straight to 4.88's, but like it has been stated only if you are going to eventually move to 35's.

Thanks Sully, That's what I will do cause I am already looking at 35's...and the overall concensus is that 37's would probably be too big. Thanks to everybody for your input.

Go with the 4.88, you won't regret it. Going from 4.11 to 4.56 isn't enough of a change to warrant the time and money involved.
