4.2 exhaust

I began to leak exhaust from around the connection of the pipe to the exhaust manifold. thought that the donut had gone bad. Went to several parts stores and to Mopar at the jeep dealership. Find out that there wasn't a donut for a 89 YJ 4.2. It is a metal to metal connection. Fianlly broke nuts loose and have tried to retigthten to stop exhaust leak under the hood. Not much success. Any suggestion on how to get a tight fit without a donut?

Clean it all with fine emery cloth make sure it fits straight and try not to over tighten it.
