4.0l with a stuck lifter.....

Has anyone ever had this problem? At first I thought the knocking noise was a blown exhaust gasket. However, I replaced that and it was still making the noise. I did a search for it and found a few Youtube videos with very similar sounds and the majority of the replies were saying it was a stuck/sticky lifter. The sound goes away after it warms up for a couple miles.

I did an oil change and added a couple quarts of Resilone and some Seafoam cleaner and so far the noise hasn't come back. We'll see in the morning if it returns after it sits and cools off all night.

It's a 2001, 4.0l with about 60,000 in front of a manual 5spd.

I've seen quite a bit of sticky lifters and collapsed lifters on a 4.0. If the ticking only occurs at first start after sitting for a while like overnight, thats normal. If it does it even after warm up and is isolated on one or two lifters, i would say the lifters in question is faulty however, if the ticking occurs on all the lifters at all times, i would check the oil pump idle pressure.

UPDATE: Jeep sat overnight and when I started it this morning there was nothing but the sweet sound of exhaust (all coming out of the tailpipe). I guess it was a sticky lifter.

Do I need to be concerned for future repairs (ie engine rebuild) ?

I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it occurs more often.

Thanks! What gears do you need? I've have a set of 4:11's from a D44 & D30. The 44's are missing a tooth, but I was driving them when I took it apart no probs!

I need gears for my Model 20 rear and 30's on the front, narrow axle. I'm running on 2.72's and it sucks. I'm sure the 4.11's would be a lot better than what i have now. How much do you want for the 30's?

It's just the gears and the carrier.....$50? They're out of my TJ and I'm not sure if they'll work on your rig, but if you're smarter than I, you'll probably know better.

I wish i knew the answer to that(if it would work) , unfortunately im not an expert on that field. Would someone please chime in and educate me on this matter?!, pretty PLEASE?

A dana 30 is a dana 30. There isnt a whole lot they have changed over the years with Dana 30's Tube size and some seal sizing for diffrent axle diameters. Mainly there a 27 spline crush sleeve axle.
