4.0l Swap compatibility

Hi All, Hope you can help me...

My wife's '02 Grand Cherokee blew-up this morning, so I am on the hunt for a replacement 4.0l engine.. I wanted to ask if there what year engine's were compatible so that I don't buy an engine I can't use.

I ask this because I recently helped my sone with an Explorer and there were 2 engine types and there were differences between model years..

I just did a 4.0 swap in my 94 yj, i used a 87 4.0 from a cherakee the problem i ran into was that the 87 was an amc motor so i had to swap heads and cranks.....more trouble than what its worth. Go to the auto parts store and look intake gaskets for a 98 or later 4.o......at worst you will have to swap heads.....they should be the same once crystler took jeep over, i said to look up the intake gasket because if they are the same then you are good to go , easy fix
