4.0 transmission 2wd Grand Cherokee

I am trying to find out if a 4x4 transmission will work in a 2wd. I have a 98 grand cherokee, I know on a chevy you can just change the tail shaft but unsure on a jeep. I can find the 4x4 ones all day long but the 4x2 is rare to find. Does anyone know about this? Thanks

From what i can tell , the 44 and 46RE are the ones that have the Case extension adapters that can be for a two wheel drive or an adapter for a four wheel drive. i didnt see one for a 42RE transmission.

the transmission is a 42re, so basically you don't think it can be?

You could also run the tcase if you have access to the parts rig and just run the rear driveshaft.
