33's with a 2.5

This is my dilemma. I have a 95YJ (2.5 4cyl) with 2" body lift, 3" suspension lift and running 31's on 15x10 wheels currently. I desperately want to upgrade to 33's next spring(profit sharing!). I do some off roading, nothing too crazy. What are the real concerns running this setup. Axles are stock - 30frt and 35 rear. I know everyone says no bigger than 31 or 32's. I am wanting to run 33X10.5 not the 12.5's. Is this doable or will I lose that much power? Any input is appreciated. thanks.

It's not too much different from the 31" tires, about the same jump you made from stock to 31". I run 32" x11.5" and it's livable, but I've done quite a few power mods to the 2.5L engine.

Good choice on going with the 1.5" wide tires, it will keep wind resistance and rolling mass down.

maybe i'm just being nosy.. but if you don't plan on 4x4ing too much... why do you want to get 33's... you're just killing your fuel economy

Maybe try the 33x10.50x15 instead of the 33x12.50x15. The less weight and wind resistance of the narrower tire may be a better choice for your 4 banger and stock gears, not to mention they wont stick out past your fenders. That is, of course, unless you don't mind re-gearing.

interco and BF Goodrich offer these sizes, among others.

I'm running 33x12.5's on my 97 4 banger. You'll see a loss of power, nothing a lil winding out the gears won't fix. Add an intake and exhaust and some of the power will come back. The axles will hold up esspecially since it's going to spend most of its time on the road. If you want to be able to go highway speeds uphill your going to have to regear though.

As I stated before I would go with the 10.5 width in the 33's to keep some of the resistance and weight off. I do go offroad quite a bit mostly in mud and sand though so the addt size would be nice and my 31's look wimpy. So my next question is regarding gearing. What ratio would you guys suggest I regear to and what is the approx cost? Thanks.

4.88 for a 5speed, 4.56 if you have an auto.

Runs about $200 to $250 per axle parts, and installation can be $150 to around $300 per axle.

There is a local Jeep mechanic around here that does it $150 per axle on the side. Great price and great DC trained work. Good to find a jeeper that can do it cheaper.

I would try them first, but you very well may end up wanting to re-gear. A few mods to the motor (intake, elec fan, etc) could help a little, but she definately is going to not be the same!

I have a 95 2.5 with 33x12.5 swampers and love it....of course its not as fast anymore, but I didn't buy a jeep to drive fast......I thinik I will eventually regear, but its not that bad right now

thanks guys. AT least I know it can be done. I have the K&N intake and getting the flowmaster after xmas time so that should help too. I guess I will decide in the spring, I dont want to lose too much power for the road trips and interstate driving.
