3.8 or 4.2

Hello,

I have a long block I would like to I.D further. The block has the number, 3227445 H-5 on the side and the head is stamped 3227258. The casting chart I have says it could be a 232 or a 258. The chart chows the bore as 3.75 on both. Is there any way to tell the difference?

Jeep security tip

The list I have shows it as a 1975 to 1979, however it als shows it as a 3.8 or a 4.2. You can view he listing at http://www.butlers-a1.com/amcm.htm

The bore is the same but the stroke is different. I have heard that the block and head were the same for these 2 engines, so I dont know if you could figure out what you have from the serial numbers, especially if its rebuilt.

He has a link to 258 block casting numbers. According to him, both the Block and head casting numbers you gave point to it being a 75 - 79 258.

Thanks for the info, I am going with that. gonna rebuild it for my 86.
