My passenger side brake light will not work! The bulb is fine and I just replaced a burnt socket and used bulb grease and it still doesn't work. What's the problem?

Does the drivers side brake light shine brightly when brake pedal is depressed or somewhat dimmer than normal and intermittent ? If you cannot find current in the socket or by back probing it with a test light , you will have to trace down the feed wire back to the splice where it connects with the drivers side brake light feed wire. Look for corrosion at the splice and any breaks in insulation in your inspection. Be prepared to replace wire of the same gauge if any wire is found to be faulty. Also , check ground wiring for corrosion or breaks as well. One more thing worth checking is are the terminals on the socket loose causing intermittent contact ? This can happen from handling , particularly during reinstallation of tail light. I must be careful of this when reinstalling the tai lights on my '92 XJ as well . The socket terminals may be somewhat close to body flanges on the tail light mounting to so be at tentative to this . This can causing unwanted grounding.

The drivers side is bright and normal. I was able to make a good contact on the (old) socket terminals and it now works but I have a feeling it won't last more than a few weeks. I saved the new socket for use at a later date.
