1993 Jeep wrangler carburator project

Hello all. I am new to all of this. I have a 1993 jeep wrangler, 4.0 5spd. I have learned a lot from doing my own maintenance. I have learned a lot by working on different year model wranglers. I have had recent performance problems with my engine. My next big project is going to be removing the fuel injection system and putting a carburator system on it. Reason being, it has 145,000 miles on it. during that time, has run great. I'v never had any major performance problems out of it until recently. During my most recent road trip, it started cutting out on me. after letting it cool for a few minutes, she would crank up and go for about ten more miles until she acted up again. Keep in mind that the temperature never got above 160 degrees.Since then I have never gotten a check engine light and the problem just got worse. I have also replaced every sensor and every fuel and ignition component on the engine, still no engine light and still the same problem. I have also checked all the wiring for loose grounds or anything obvious. I have seen a lot of you say that a fuel injection from carburator mod wasn't too costly. However, my jeep came with MFI and this is getting rediculous. Sensors are not cheap. I have taken my jeep to master ASE certified mechanics and paid the rediculous diagnostic fee to have them tell me that they could'nt find anything and that they had never seen this before.
So, I'm tired of the BS. I am going to go back to 1990 to get some of my parts because that was the last year they put the voltage regulator in the alternator. The regulator on every year after 1990 has the regulator in the computer. I am eliminating all of the computer related equipment. this also means that I have to use the distributor from 1990 as well. This will eliminate the camshaft position sensor. I am going to use a after market ignition system that includes the ignition control module. Fuel delivery will include a after market offenhauser 4BBl intake manifold and a holley 4150 pn. 0-80507-1 (390 CFM) carburator. She should run like a scaulded dog. I will let y'all know how this project turns out. I am open for any questions. Later!!!!!!!!!

There was a member on here who converted a TJ from EFI to a carb. For the life of me I can't remember but if you search I bet you'll find one of his threads. Then you could go through his posts to see what he ran into.

All I can say is following along the project through his posts it sure seemed like a nightmare. Everything being tied into the computer made for some strange problems.

Will it have to pass emmissions? If it does, it won't. Just a thought.

Aww, come on. Don't give up yet. Think about this. The computer reads data from the multiple sensors on the engine. Name what sensors would cause the engine to turn off. You can eliminate the o2 and any kind of knock sensors, they would just make it run poorly. I can't name all the various Jeep sensors, but you probably can. There's really not all that many. I'm a little more familiar with the Chevy stuff, but the principles are still the same.
Now let's assume that the bulb on the check engine light is good since the diagnostics didn't reveal anything either. If your check engine light does not come on when the problem occurs then the problem is a result of something that is not monitored by the computer. That should narrow down the search a little more.
Now think to yourself, Is there any commonality during the conditions where the stalling occurs? Going uphill, certain temp outside, etc...
I would re-think the problem starting in the fuel delivery area. Have you checked the fuel pressure? What about the fuel lines and filter? Did your Ex put sugar in the tank? I would even go as far as to check the gas cap. There is a spring loaded vent in the cap. If the spring goes bad then it can essentially cause a vacuum in the tank and starve the fuel pump. I' had this happen to me on my old XJ.

Your a funny guy. But seriously, the check engine light works fine, at least it used to until I removed all that stuff. You might be able to use the computer and all the wires for a boat anchor. Everything, including the fuel pump is brand new. Finally, I tried driving around with the gas cap removed, guess what, same problem. I just got tired of the same old problem after a couple hundred dollars worth of sensors later. Thanks anyways.
