1988 YJ power steering conversion

I have an '88 yj 4.2l that im rebuilding from scratch. I rebuilt the power steering pump by changing seals, cleaning reservoir and painting everything, but the inside of the reservoir has rusted after the cleaning. I bought a new AGR pump that I thought would come w.a new reservoir, but alas it did not. I've searched everywhere for just a reservoir, but no luck. I also wanted to replace the pulley, but I couldn't find that either. The dealer can't get any new parts either.
i was wondering if anybody knows where I can get a reservoir, pulley or possibly convert it over to a newer style pump w.a separate reservoir like the 1991 or later models. The newer pumps look like they'd fit on the '88 brackets, but I'm going by a visual.

The 4.2 yj engine is the 258 CI engine that the cj used, I would think a cj pump/reservoir Is the exact same thing.

I think your first obsticule will be which belt setup you have. V-belt or serpintine? I'm guessing v-belt and the later pumps as you're refferring to are serpintine. It can be made to work without a doubt, its just a matter of finding a compatable v-belt pulley or converting to a serpintine setup which will require a new alternator pulley, new water pump and pulley, crank pulley, the steering pump setup and an idler arm (and of course the serpintine itself).

As for using what you currently have, the reservoir by itself without the pump will be tricky but you maybe able to find one in a scrap yard since you already have a new pump it really would not matter is the pump worked or not. And you may get lucky and find the v-belt pulley as well. Its the same pump setup that was used on most GM vehicles at the time. As for the pulley by itself, it is a tappered, keyless press on GM style.

I do have a v-belt system. I did not think of the pulley that would go on the newer style pump would be serpentine and that I'd have to change all the pulleys to go with it. I think all that work is unnecessary. I should stick to finding a good housing and pulley. Thanks for educating me on the difference in systems. I was hoping for a simple upgrade to the newer pump. Hopefully I can post pics when it's done!!

Yeah, thanks. I thought they would be the same, and didn't even think of the diff belt systems.
