What kind of bad noise. Knock. Chatter. Squeal. Howl. Whistle.

It's always hard to diagnose an engine noise unless you can hear it yourself. Things it could be are, loose torque converter bolts but with that engine I'll bet it's not an automatic. Maybe loose flywheel bolts or something in the pressure plate. Then it could be the rods. Did it happen just after an oil change? If so, what oil filter did you use? If you can get under it and listen around the pan it may help to find it. May be a good time to step up to a 6 or possibly a V8 if it's the rods.

i read about putting auto trans fluid to get rid of the chatter it helped and 2 3 4 cylinders no 1 bad i reved it up but it goes away. fram filter 4 speed no air. i have a 1948 1/2 cab also just for woods clearing

The thing with ATF is its slack of viscosity. It flows well and cleans well. I do that just before I change my oil. The 5-40 oil is what I switched my jeep to. The next day it started knocking. Now I just run the bulk 5-30 on this motor. Sounds like a lifter could be shot or oil pump not supplying at idle. A rod would get worse with rpm. Have you put a mechanical guage on it to check oil pressure.

And to replace the lifters the head has to come off. But is a very common failure. Also more often than not the cam is worn to.

I use Wix now, used fram since the 80's on most things but in the last several years I've heard so much bad about them I stopped. The final straw was when I saw a video about oil filters ( I think it was on youtube) where they cut them open and explaned about them a bit. There are different grade filters but even the cheap Wix filters rated pretty high. In the video they counted the pleats looked at the drain back valve to see if it was cheaply made and other things. I'm not a ford man by no means but the motorcraft filter got high marks in the test. I may be wrong about fram but untill someone proves different I wont buy one.
